City of Ember is an upcoming film by Walden Media based on the 2003 novel
The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau. The novel was adapted by Caroline
Thompson, & the film will be directed by Gil Kenan. City of Ember will be
released on October 10, 2008.The story follows two children, Lina Mayfleet
& Doon Harrow; they live in the City of Ember, where the sky is always as
dark as the darkest night. As Ember's power source begins to fail & the
lamps start to flicker, they search for clues that will unlock ancient
mysteries about the city & save the people of Ember before it's too
late.Production
In October 2004, Playtone partners Tom Hanks & Gary Goetzman purchased
film rights to Jeanne Duprau's 2003 novel The City of Ember. They entered
negotiations with Caroline Thompson to adapt the novel & Gil Kenan to
direct the film. The deal also includes an option on the sequel novel The
People of Sparks.
Filming began in early summer & wrapped up in October, a 16-week shooting
process. A former paint hall near the shipyard Harl& & Wolff in Belfast's
Titanic Quarter has been converted into the post-apocalyptic city. Other
filming sites included Engl&, Romania, Prague, & Berlin.
Release
City of Ember will be released on October 10, 2008. The theatrical
trailer was released with The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
